Ambient includes a local Model Context Protocol (MCP) server. It lets compatible AI agents search and read the processed context Ambient has made eligible for agent use. Ambient does not install this connection into your agent automatically. Ambient must be running, and you must ask the agent to add the server to its MCP configuration.

Connect your agent

Send this message to the agent you want to connect:
Your agent may ask you to approve a configuration change or restart its session. Follow the agent’s instructions, then ask it to check Ambient’s status tool.

What the MCP can do

The connection is read-only. Depending on the context available in your Ambient rollout, an agent can:
  • Check whether Ambient context is available.
  • List eligible chunks, intents, and memories.
  • Search processed context by keywords and, when available, meaning.
  • Open a specific context item.
  • Follow links between related context items.
  • Validate that the eligible context is available.
The MCP does not let an agent change Ambient data. It does not provide access to Ambient’s private database, raw recordings, screenshots, audio, or capture artifacts.

If it does not connect

  • Keep the Ambient application open while the agent uses the MCP.
  • Confirm the URL is exactly http://127.0.0.1:8765/mcp.
  • Ask the agent to reconnect or restart after it changes its MCP configuration.
  • Ask the agent to call status before searching.
  • If the connection is refused, restart Ambient and try again.
The server listens only on your computer’s loopback interface. Other devices on your network cannot connect to it.
